Phantom Blade Zero is out on PC: review scores

Phantom Blade Zero, one of the most anticipated action games of recent years, is finally out. Developed by S-GAME Studio, it unlocked on Steam on October 28 (US time), which is October 29 in many regions. It is available on Steam and the Epic Games Store on PC, and on PS5.

The game was originally planned for September 9 but slipped by a few weeks. The wait paid off: the PC version reached an 88 average on Metacritic.

What is it about?

Phantom Blade Zero is a wuxia action RPG that blends the Chinese martial arts tradition with a dark fantasy world. You play Soul, a warrior with only 66 days left to live. That limited time sits at the heart of both the story and progression.

What critics say

• IGN and GamesRadar+ gave it 9/10.

• GameSpot and VGC scored it 8/10.

• Eurogamer was more reserved at 6/10.

The consensus is that the fluid, deep combat is the game’s strongest point. Criticism focuses on a story that plays it too safe, invisible walls and some technical issues.

On PC

Built in Unreal Engine 5, the game supports hardware ray tracing and path tracing on PC. Performance impressions are mixed, with some reviews reporting stutter even on powerful cards. We recommend checking your system against the requirements before buying.

The game’s Steam list price is $59.99. A physical PS5 edition arrives next year.
